Sports spotlight | Don Quishoot’s favorite number is 45
TU/e boasts a total of 38 student sports associations. And every one of them offers its own unique experience: from slamming aces to skimming across the water. At student sports center SSC, you get a wide range of options to choose from: gaming, jumping, running, cycling, rowing, flying, shooting, hanging, playing chess, surfing, punching and pushing. Cursor wants to put every one of these associations in the spotlight. The first question is “What is your favorite number?”
Warming up
ESHV Don Quishoot loves the number 45, because it’s the house number of their favorite pub, La Route. What they also love is socializing. On team Sundays, after their games, they have dinner together at the Paviljoen at SSC. Sometimes with as many as 150 hockey players at a time. The organizing team chooses a theme for the meal and party. “A couple of beers are usually enjoyed during these parties,” says chairman Gijs Sleijffers modestly. The association song can be found on Spotify. The cheerful lyrics are set to a song by Boudewijn de Groot and it’s called Don Quishoot Clublied. This is how it starts: “Ik ben goed met sticks en ballen dus ik ging bij Don Quishoot, bier en hockey is nu alles wat ik wil” [I’m good with a stick and balls so I joined Don Quishoot, beer and hockey is all I want now] and the end goes: “het maakt niet uit hoe ik ben opgesteld, jou dekken kan ik op en naast het veld” [it doesn’t matter where I’m positioned, I can cover you both on and off the field].

Analysis
The teams are close-knit groups with their own characteristics. New members are welcome, but first have to attend an open practice session for introductions. The men’s teams have names like Joepies, Kanniballen, and Houthakkers. Chairman Gijs is part of the Heren van Flatsoen team. The women’s teams have names such as Goaldiggers, Hotshots or Assepushters.
2017 was a very important year for Don Quishoot. That’s when the SSC built a second field hockey field for the association. “That really showed that we were growing and being supported in our growth, so it was a huge win for our association.”
