ILI signs agreement with Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Eindhoven

The Intelligent Lighting Institute (ILI) at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) intends to develop intelligent urban lighting solutions together with the cities of Eindhoven, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, and Philips, Cisco and Alliander. The parties involved signed the Smart Lights in Metropolitan Areas (SLIM) agreement in Eindhoven yesterday. Pilot projects will be started in the three cities in the coming months.

The agreement was signed by municipal executive board members Monique List (Eindhoven), Carolien Gehrels (Amsterdam) and Alexandra van Huffelen (Rotterdam). The other signatories were TU/e Executive Board member Jo van Ham, Floriaan Tasche (Philips), Joost Hermans (Cisco Netherlands) and Pallas Agterberg (Alliander).Intelligent lighting can be used to make public spaces more attractive and safer, or to save energy. Part of the research to be carried out will involve a number of pilots in the three cities. These will be in the Stratumseind nightlife area in Eindhoven, the Port of Rotterdam and the ArenA area in Amsterdam. The three cities represent the most important economic regions in the Netherlands. Last year the three cities decided to work together more closely to boost the economy and increase the  international competitive strength of the Netherlands. The development of intelligent urban lighting solutions is one of the ways in which this ambition is being put into practice.“The signing of this agreement marks a milestone in the history of ILI”, says Emile Aarts, scientific program director of ILI. “The institute was founded in 2009 as Open Innovation partnership for intelligent lighting solutions, with TU/e and Philips Lighting as ‘founding fathers’. The SLIM agreement shows that there is a strong basis for this partnership, and that all the parties involved are expressing their confidence in the joint development of socio-economic innovations with smart lighting in urban areas in a national context.”
