Fuss about health insurance foreign student

Many foreign students are fined unjustly for not having Dutch health insurance. The Partij van de Arbeid is worried and has asked parliamentary questions regarding the issue.

Already fifteen thousand international students have been summoned to take out health insurance, says Transfer. The magazine for the internationalization of higher education contacted eight universities of applied sciences and universities and concludes some students no longer want to study here because of the issues concerning the Dutch health insurance law.The law could be one of the reasons for foreign students to opt for studying elsewhere rather than in the Netherlands. PvdA parliamentarians Mohammed Mohandis (education) and Lea Bouwmeester (healthcare) want students who don’t require Dutch health insure to be filtered from the CVZ (health care insurance board). Ever since 2006 everyone working or living in the Netherlands must have basic health insurance. Foreign students under thirty are exempt from this rule, because they are often insured in their home country, and their policy generally offers proper coverage abroad as well. However, whenever students start making money with a job on the side of internship, they do have to take out Dutch insurance.
