Notice of exclusion applicable to senior students as well

Starting from September, educational institutions are free to dismiss students from programs even after their first year, because of an experiment with notices of exclusion.

Minister of Education Jet Bussemaker wants universities and universities of applied sciences to experiment with the notice of exclusion (bindend studieadvies – bsa) for second and third-year students. Students who don’t score enough credits will have to leave. Instututions have asked for the measurement to be able to meet their performance agreements.

The minister mentioned more reasons for the trial. She says motivated students suffer from their disinterested peers. “Motivated students should be the norm, for students and teachers alike,” said in a Radio 1 interview this morning. “The goal is to improve education eventually. We’ve set the bar high for the institutions.”

Universities and universities of applied sciences are free to shape their bsa. Like the performance agreements, dismissing senior students is an experiment. They’re also free to send home first-year students sooner, which is currently allowed only at the end of the first year.
