Dissertations on Bulgarian yoghurt and nuclear energy

On Thursday, Bulgarian researchers Elitsa Stoilova and Ivaylo Hristov will be defending their dissertations on the introduction of Bulgarian yoghurt in Europe (Stoilova) and the history of nuclear energy in Bulgaria (Hristov). Their PhDs at the TU/e Department of IE&IS are part of a program to promote the history of technology of Middle and Eastern Europe.

The program was introduced when TU/e was setting up a European research program. It turned out there was hardly any expertise on the history of technology in Middle and Eastern Europe, says dr. Jan Korsten of the Foundation for the History of Technology. “On top of that, it was hard to get access to any sources because of the language barrier. But if you want to write a comprehensive European history, those regions should be included.”
