TU/e employee dies after fire in apartment

A fire in his Cederlaan apartment killed TU/e employee Özhan Coskun last Saturday morning. After the fire, which had started in the kitchen, the 29-year old PDEng trainee of the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He died from his injuries.

Özhan Coskun was a Professional Doctorate in Engineering trainee in the first year of the two-year design program Automotive Systems Design (ASD), which is coordinated by dr. Peter Heuberger. The ASD group is devastated at the loss of their Turkish colleague who was known as one of the most talented, helpful, and spirited people within ASD.

On Monday morning, the department had organized a commemoration for a few dozen of Coskun’s colleagues. His father and his best friend from Turkey were present as well. The Departmental Board also attended the commemoration, as did Executive Board Chairman Jan Mengelers, who addressed the attendees.

The fire started in the kitchen of the one-bedroom apartment of Coskun on Saturday night around 4.45 a.m. There was a lot of smoke, and the building was evacuated as a precaution. Police investigation has shown the fire wasn’t the result of arson – it was a fatal accident.

The body of Coskun will be flown back to his home country on Monday night or Tuesday morning.

There’s an online condolence book for Özhan Coskun.
