2,500 solar panels on the sports center and Spectrum

On the roofs of the Student Sports Center and Spectrum some 2,500 solar panels will be installed this fall. With the more than 600,000 kilowatt hours the panels will generate each year, TU/e will easily meet the requirement for awarding Atlas (the former main building) the BREEAM sustainability rating ‘outstanding’.

An external party (OVVIA) will install and maintain the solar panels. In return, TU/e is guaranteeing that for the coming 15 years TU/e will buy the electricity that is generated. This transaction is profitable for TU/e thanks to the SDE+ subsidy scheme. This funds the difference between the cost price of 'grey' energy and the price that  TU/e  must pay energy-generator OVVIA.

The Student Sports Center and Spectrum are the only buildings eligible for the panels. The other roofs on campus have too much shade or will need maintenance during the 15-year contract period. The panels are expected to become operational in November.
