Dinner @ Cyclamenstraat 11

Every two weeks Cursor visits a student house in Eindhoven every two weeks. The cooks reveal their secret recipes and we get to know the house and it's its inhabitantsresidents. This time it's Dinner @ Ichthus House, Cyclamenstraat 11.

What kind of house is this?

This house is home to eight students who share a Christian lifestyle; most of them are members of Ichthus, the Christian student association. Only five people sit down to dinner in the spacious kitchen cum living room. “We eat, pray and read the Bible together,” says main tenant David van der Schoor (fifth-year Architecture, Building and Planning). “But our belief isn't our only topic of conversation, you know. We also talk about how the day went,” says Roos Krösschell, (second-year Chemical Engineering) after a short prayer spoken by David in advance of the meal.

What traditions, customs or special house rules do you have?

As well as an annual house party, regular barbecues and the annual St Nicholas party, they all stand at the foot of the stairs and yell "Dinner" when the meal is ready. “And every year during Orientation Week we make about 2500 pancakes with the three other Christian houses in the city,” adds Paula Uittenbogaard (third-year Biomedical Engineering). Every resident has to vacate his or her room after three years to make way for a newcomer and they all leave their handprints on a wall in the house, the Wall of Fame.

Recipe: Hamburgers with potatoes and salad

Preheat the oven to 220 C.
Wash and cut a head of iceberg lettuce in strips and slice four tomatoes.
Once the oven is hot, shake three packets of potatoes out onto a baking tray and sprinkle with olive oil.
Make the honey-mustard dressing using 3 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar, 1 tablespoon of mustard, and add liquid honey to taste.
Toss the lettuce, tomatoes, rucola together with the dressing in a salad bowl.
After ten minutes take the potatoes out of the oven and add pepper and salt and other herbs.
Shake the potatoes and return them to the oven for another ten minutes.
Meanwhile, on a low heat, start cooking the five hamburgers, add some herbs and turn them over a couple of times. Then turn up the heat and they will be about done.
After about ten minutes the potatoes will also be cooked.

Bon appétit!
