New head keen to make TU/e more future-proof

The new head of the department Safety & Security and Location Management, Peter Bloemers (29), took up his post at TU/e last month. He succeeds Mirjam Jahnke, who will be emigrating to France after her last working day at TU/e at the end of this month.

Bloemers has most recently been Specialist Chain Promotion with the Security Region Limburg-Noord. His first impressions of TU/e have been good. "A robust calamity management organization is in place. It is easy to see that the university attaches great importance to security. The fact that the university runs its own fire department, for example, is remarkable. Safety is obviously a current topic on several fronts."

Bloemers is keen to start preparing 'his' department for the future straight away. "We are mainly occupied with day-today- matters, but as a department we also need to look at how we can best respond to changes on the campus. Very soon we will have more people going about their business in a smaller area, and the campus is becoming ever more international. What implications does this have for our role? 'We put a fire and go home,' no longer applies." He is also arguing the case for better information provision so that incident response becomes incident prevention.
