And how are things in Christchurch?

New Zealand is famous for its beautiful nature and its interesting Maori culture. The influences because of the past as a British colony are still very evident in Christchurch. The province of Canterbury is a very flat area, making it ideal to cycle. Most people are surprised when I tell them I like Christchurch, since they think it is a very boring area. However within a half hour cycle you will enjoy the beautiful Port Hills, within a one and a half hour car trip, you will enjoy the harbor of Akaroa.

Christchurch also has some very beautiful beaches and many (botanical) gardens. Therefor I believe the landscape of Canterbury is very nice, however you need to find the nice spots.

The people drive on the left side of the road, which seems dangerous, however you will get used to it very quickly if you cycle to the university day. During the weekend I enjoy cycling, walking and bird watching.

"I get to know the kiwi culture"

I am doing a home stay, which means I am staying in the home of some New-Zealand people. This has a lot of advantages! They take me to nice places close to Christchurch, I can play with their dogs and I get to know the kiwi (people in New-Zealand are called kiwis) culture. For example: I watch rugby pretty often and my brekkie (breakfast) consists of weetbix with milk.

The university campus is pretty nice. They are renovating a lot of buildings so there are some very old buildings and some very new buildings. Usually I go for a half an hour walk following the crystal clear river of through the Ilam gardens. What surprised me is that many students use their skateboard to go to university instead of a bicycle of a car.

I advise everybody to go on an internship abroad. You will find yourself in a unique situation which means you will get to know yourself better. Besides that it is a unique way to get to know a country. New Zealand is a very nice country to do an internship. On the one hand it is a very easy country, since they speak English and the cities are very European. On the other side you can enjoy the beautiful landscapes New Zealand has to offer.
