ATeam parts ways with Stint

A joint project between the ATeam, an automotive student team at TU/e and Fontys, and Stint, the manufacturer of electric vehicles for passengers and goods, will not be going ahead. The fatal accident involving a stint in Oss on September 20 and the decision by Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen to bar the stint from the road for an indefinite period have motivated the ATeam's board to abandon the proposed collaboration for good.

Lorenzo Engelen, alumnus of the TU/e program Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences and since early 2018 project manager at Stint, is the contact person for the ATeam at the Bilthoven-based company. For this year a technically challenging project had been conceived, focusing on the cargo stint: the version designed to distribute goods in city centers.

On the grounds of TU/e, incidentally, construction firm Heijmans has been working with a special stint for the past two years, a resource at the disposal of its employees. That vehicle now also stands idle.

Sensors

The ATeam was due, says team manager Sander Steeghs, to start experimenting with the application of sensors to prevent collisions with stationary objects. According to Steeghs and Engelen, it was clearly the intention, provided this project was successfully completed, to see whether these sensors could be applied to vehicles as a fixture during the annual check-ups in Bilthoven.

Now that Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen (Infrastructure and Water Management), on the advice of the Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT),  has taken the precautionary decision to remove the stint from public roads, the ATeam has no other option than to terminate its cooperation with Stint, says Steeghs.

On Thursday October 11 the board and the team jointly decided to shift the focus this year back to the Prius, Steeghs states. “With a particular emphasis on connected and cooperative driving, automatic parking and world modeling, and throughout the year we will continue to develop this technology and demonstrate it at various events,” says the team manager, who will himself be passing on the baton in November. “We will continue our search for a new platform for which we can develop safer and more efficient mobility with the help of our technology.”
