CLMN | Does anybody here teach religion?

10/09/2013

Have you ever wondered what would have happened if religion would have never been present in our lives the way it is present now? Imagine religion was just like a stream of education and nothing more. Just like choosing mathematics as a major. What if a person without any background of religion would be given the choice for a religion?

Recently I visited Berlin and met a gentleman there. We came to talk about the fall of the Berlin wall and history related to it. The talk went from one topic to another and then we started talking about religion. He told me some unbelievable things: when the Berlin wall was torn down, people from East Germany were relieved from a restrained life under the Soviet Union territory.

Those people were living a life of imprisonment and were cut off from the rest of the world and its progress. After the fall they were suddenly provided with education and other basic facilities.

Religion was one of those facilities. Most of the people from East Germany didn’t know what religion was and what they were supposed to do with it. There were evening schools arranged where they were given a choice to select a religion for themselves. The choice of religion was a tough one for them. People were struggling to make a choice for a religion by weighing it in different contexts.

If religion would have been just an optional course in each of our lives, certainly, this world would have been a very different place to live.

Just a thought.
