First fusion master receives degree

On Monday, August 25, Kevin Verhaegh received the first-ever master degree of Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion. The master is a joint program of the Departments of Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, and it’s the only two-year master’s program in Europe that focuses on the science and technology of nuclear fusion.

TU/e has made nuclear fusion a prominent research area, and set up a full master’s program as part of that. The program has been acknowledged officially two years ago, and has been accredited by the Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). TU/e wants to become the go-to institute for many European fusion specialists.Fifteen students are currently enrolled in the master program. Study program manager Rogier Jaspers says at least fifteen more will start on September 1. “Two years ago, we started with seven students. Kevin is one of those pioneers, and the first to graduate today.” Kevin Verhaegh also graduated from the Department of Applied Physics, for which he will receive his degree on Wednesday. After having successfully completed his bachelor’s of Applied Physics, he conducted research at JET, the Oxford-based European center for fusion research, as part of an internship. As a summer student, he also worked at Fusion for Energy in Barcelona for several months. For his thesis he opted for a combined project of the Fusion group, and Coherence and Quantum Technology of the Department of Applied Physics.
