Student increase not as steep as expected

Right now, TU/e has welcomed 1,695 new bachelor students. The 8.2 percent increase compared to exactly a year ago is much lower than the estimated 22 to 25 percent that was expected back in May. Dean of the Bachelor College Lex Lemmens is “kind of happy, actually. A moderate growth is better than two years of major expansion, which was expected initially.”

Most new students applied for Applied Physics (+29.3%), Computer Science (+28.7%), and Innovation Sciences (+20.8%). Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering have admitted the most students in absolute numbers: 252 and 245 new bachelor students respectively. At Industrial Design and Built Environment, the number of first-year students has dropped considerably: -12.5% (ID) and -12.3% (BE).

Another thing that’s striking is the number of new master students coming in from other universities to start the new academic year at TU/e. The current growth is 40.1 percent: from 334 on September 3, 2013, to 468 today.
