PhD candidate Mechanical Engineering dies in car accident

Last weekend, 26-year old PhD candidate at TU/e Giuseppe Melpignano died in a car accident. His girlfriend Kiki Frencken (25) did not survive the crash either. Giuseppe was doing a PhD track at the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The PhD candidate and his girlfriend, both from Maastricht, died in a car crash on the A2 on Saturday morning. The accident was caused by a wrong-way driver who collided with the couple’s car head-on. The 51-year old driver did not survive the crash.

The TU/e Executive Board, the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Microsystems Group are devastated by the news. Giuseppe Melpignano has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from TU/e. In 2013, he started a PhD track at professor Jaap den Toonder’s Microsystems Group. The group remembers him for his unfailing enthusiasm, his great empathy that made him a unifying factor within the group, and his innovative ideas and research plans.

A condolence book can be found in the hall of Gemini. The department will present the book to Giuseppe’s family. Mental support for students and staff coping with bereavement is and will be available for some time. Those who are interested can contact Mechanical Engineering HR advisors Susan Opgenoorth or Lonneke van Luxemburg.
