Graduate students must sign code of conduct as well

New graduate students are required to sign the TU/e Code of Conduct for Academic Practice upon the start of the new academic year in September. Currently, only academic staff has that signature requirement.

Last week, the Executive Board decided their own code of conduct, which TU/e wrote using The Netherlands Code of Conduct for Academic Practice of VSNU as a guideline, should be signed by all new graduate students as well.

The final bachelor project, graduate thesis, PDEng report, and dissertation are also to be accompanied by a signed statement starting September 1. A letter that was sent to departmental councils, study program managers, and exam committees on June 25 states that signing must be done in the presence of the student’s mentor, who is also supposed to discuss the topic of academic integrity with their student.

Bor de Kock, member of student party Groep-één, will not comment on the procedure the Executive Board has drawn up, but overall he does support their decision. De Kock: “The University Council has been discussing the topic for some time now. We believe students should learn the rules that apply to academics as soon as possible.”
