Spectrum evacuated after fire in laboratory

This morning around 10 o’clock the Spectrum building was evacuated due to a fire in a closed space inside one of the laboratories on the second floor, as a TU/e spokesman for the Executive Board has informed us. At that moment there was nobody present in that area. There are no casualties and in the course of today the fire brigade is removing all potentially hazardous substances. It is not known what caused the fire.

This morning employees heard a loud bang from the ground floor in Spectrum and subsequently saw smoke coming out of the ventilation system, Executive Board spokesman Barend Pelgrim informs us. It concerns a lab of the Plasma & Materials Processing group led by professor Erwin Kessels. This lab is not regarded as a high-risk area, Pelgrim adds. There was a fire in a closed space in that laboratory which caused a lot of smoke, the TU/e spokesman explains. Pelgrim says that the lab must be considered as lost. In the course of today the fire brigade is removing all potentially hazardous substances and the Labor Inspectorate will investigate the incident.
