Web Science en Software Science degree programs combined

The start of the new academic year will see the disappearance of the separate majors Web Science and Software Science. The students and lecturers affected were informed on Tuesday that these degree programs are being combined to form the major Computer Science and Engineering. Current students have until Augustus 31, 2020 to complete their Bachelor's in the existing programs Web Science and Software Science.

The new major Computer Science and Engineering contains elements of both of the disappearing majors, reveals a clarifying email. As the mail also explains, the new program will have a more coherent structure than those it replaces. The opportunity for electives means students will still be able to choose profiles similar to the existing majors Web Science and Software Science.

According to program manager Marloes van Lierop, combining the programs will ease the pressure on staff. And thus, she explains, this decision is not unrelated to the planned upper limit on student intake that is due to be imposed on the Bachelor's program in 2018. “We have limited capacity, in terms of both support and scientific staff. The huge growth we have experienced in recent years is taking its toll. Lecturers are working with maximum student numbers. But this aside, the change springs from a heartfelt need for program improvement.”
