Dinner @ Delta Pappa

Cursor visits a studenthouse in Eindhoven every two weeks. The cooks reveal their secret recipes and we get to know the house and it's inhabitants. This time: Dinner @ Delta Pappa, Hertog Hendrik van Brabantplein 4.

What is the origin of the name of the house ‘Delta Pappa’?
According to the senior student of the house Chris Hoedemakers (PDEng Software Technology) they first thought it was to do with the postcode of the house (PD) or with the women’s debating society which used to be located there. “We only found out the day some men rang the doorbell who claimed that this was their old student house and they wanted to take a peek”, says Chris. They told us that ‘Delta Pappa’ was alleged to be a yell uttered by someone who did not feel like doing a certain chore. “For instance, if someone’s name was called to fetch beer, that person would react by yelling ‘Delta Pappa!’”, Hoedemakers explains. Why exactly it was Delta Pappa rather than another phrase or word is something nobody knows.

Mushroom risotto with a side salad

“In this house we never really cook from packets”, says Tijmen Kregting (fourth-year student at Fontys Applied Psychology). Tijmen is always willing to cook and is also doing so this evening, because he likes to, and in order to avoid having to do the dishes. The recipe is for four.

- Cook two packets of risotto rice with vegetable stock according to the instructions on the packet.
- Bake one clove of garlic per person together with a tray of sliced chestnut mushrooms and a tray of Boletus edulis.
- Then add this to the risotto together with Italian herbs, thyme, two chopped onions and a sizeable dash of white wine. (the rest was drunk at the table)
- The salad is made up of: lettuce, tomato, cucumber and bacon cubes. Mix well and Bob’s your uncle!

Are there any house rules?
“We only have three important rules”, explains Claire Pappers (third-year student of Medical Sciences and Technology). “It is absolutely forbidden to use telephones at the table during dinner, and if you break this rule, you have to do the dishes. When you cook, you’re exempt from washing up and if you forget dessert when cooking, you still need to do the dishes.” If there is one thing that is clear, it is that they are not particularly keen on washing up in this house. Claire accordingly tries to shirk this after dinner by giving us a detailed description of the house.
