TU/e gains Fair Trade University status

TU/e can now call itself a Fair Trade University, and is only the second university in the Netherlands entitled to do so. The Fair Trade University Certificate mainly recognizes the university's promotion of fair trade and the product range it carries. Executive Board member Jo van Ham received the certificate yesterday.

‘Fair Trade Universities and Fair Trade Universities of Applied Sciences’ are part of the longer running 'Fair Trade Municipalities' campaign (Fairtrade Gemeenten). This initiative aims to inspire as many municipalities, companies, organizations, store owners and consumers as possible, as well as higher education institutions, to opt for free trade.

The certificate is due mainly to the efforts of the GO Green Office, the TU/e platform linking the university's education, research and operations. With the support of the Executive Board and the Sustainability Steering Group, the GO Green Office set about achieving the certificate. As the university has been carrying sufficient sustainable products for some time now to satisfy the requirements, in recent months time has been spent mainly on cooperating with various partners to set up activities on the theme, and on informing students and employees about the university's ambitions and the steps taken.
