Footpath should bring residents of Luna and Aurora together

Before the year is out, a footpath will emerge from the preparatory earth works currently underway on the grass fields surrounding Luna and Aurora. This will connect the two student flats. In time, a boules pitch and basketball court will be added alongside the path.

“Yes, initially Real Estate Management considered plans for a sort of Van Gogh path à la Nuenen village,” explains project leader Thijs Mooren. Designed by Daan Roosegaarde, this path emits light in the dark and the patterns on its surface are based on the paintings of Van Gogh.

“But we quickly realized that you need a lot of direct light to get the path to really light up in the dark. It is not based on some kind of glow-in-the-dark effect. And so we had to abandon that idea, because initially our path on the campus will not be illuminated. We assume that it will be used mainly during the daytime by residents of Luna and Aurora,” explains Mooren.

At present, the course of the path has been marked out across the fields by bulldozers and anti-root fabric has been laid down. Asphalting will start on December 18. “Sometime in 2018 stone chippings will be added to create a surface with a more natural look," says Mooren.

As well as the pathway, a boules pitch and small basketball court will be built, so that the residents of Luna and Aurora, mainly internationals, will have the opportunity to get to know one another in an informal setting.
