Student Sports Center hit by leakages

The water mains of the Student Sports Center have taken quite a beating over the past few days. On Thursday a pipe was damaged during activities carried out on the solar panels on the roof, in the subsequent repair work another part of the pipe broke down and Saturday saw yet another leakage. Since Monday afternoon the water has been flowing again where it should – through the pipes.

The water mains of the Student Sports Center (SSC) took the first hit when last Thursday afternoon a crane, which was used to hoist solar panels, pressed too heavily on a section of the mains. As a result half of the building went without water. Sporting was possible alright, but not all the showers and toilets could be used.

During the repair work on Friday the water mains were excavated. The digging resulted in too little counter pressure on another pipe that was still intact, says works manager Peter Geurts. “That one also burst, which forced us to close off the whole water mains. The swimming lesson for the children had to be canceled and three group lessons could not go on. Individual sportsmen and sportswomen could go in for fitness and such, but had to go home to shower.”

On Saturday a new leakage occurred, which took some time to be noticed because there was still pressure on the mains. The water trickled away into the soil, right in front of the entrance to the Student Sports Center. By means of new components this leakage was repaired on Monday.

The SSC has received few angry reactions. The works manager: “It is nice when clients can understand the situation. I would also like to say that Unica and Heijmans, which are responsible for maintenance here, worked very hard over the weekend to help us out. Fortunately everything has now been fixed again.”

Just a couple of weeks ago the Student Sports Center, more specifically the swimming pool, was also disturbed by a leakage, which in that case was caused by a short circuit. A few hundred users were affected by that breakdown.
