Minister calls working visit 'beautiful and instructive'

Minister of Education Ingrid van Engelshoven combined a working visit to the TU/e - "the nicest part of being a minister" - with the bringing of the shield and the papers belonging to the national monument status of MetaForum this Monday. She did not go home empty-handed, because she received the university’s honorary medal from the chairman of the Executive Board, Jan Mengelers.

Van Engelshoven visited two laboratories at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Flux and received an explanation from professor Ton Koonen and assistant professor Chogi Okonkwo about the progress in photonics research at the TU/e.

Next stop was Ceres, where she was updated on the vision that TU/e developed for 2030. Professor Lex Lemmens gave her a glimpse into the education of the future, emphasizing the importance of the student teams for its development. According to Lemmens, learning is increasingly happening online, but on the campus the students have to apply what they have learned more and more in multidisciplinary teams. Among other places in the innovation Space, which moved this week from the Gaslab to Matrix.

The minister was also informed about the development of the research and the establishment of the Eindhoven Engine, two other parts of the vision. TU/e alumnus Lex Hoefsloot told how he, coming from the position of teamleader of the first Solar Team Eindhoven, eventually developed into the position of CEO of Lightyear, the innovative company that builds solar cars at the Automotive Campus in Helmond on a commercial basis.

As a closing act, the minister handed over the shield in the market hall of MetaForum fitting its status of a national monument, in which she recalled for a moment that the former Executive Board had intended to demolish the W-hall.

Van Engelshoven received the honorary medal from the TU/e chairman Mengelers. Briefly and concisely, the minister judged the visit as "instructive and beautiful".
