Nigh on 1400 contestants in 'High Tech Olympics'

A record number of almost fourteen hundred visitors racked their brains at the Quiz Night XL held in the 'Klokgebouw' on Thursday evening. Taking part in the mega quiz, now a regular part of Dutch Technology Week, was once again a contingent from TU/e. But victory was not to be theirs; ironically that honor went to the team from Philips, whose name De Zesjescultuur implies doing just enough to scrap by.

The Netherlands' largest science and technology quiz saw its seventh edition last week, hosted as in previous years by presenter Julinka van Keulen and Quiz Night XL's resident professor Maarten Steinbuch (TU/e). From their elevated platform they looked out over 272 team tables where thinking, calculating, discussion and analysis went on tirelessly for hours.

The top three places were hotly contended on Thursday evening, finally being decided on minimal point differences, say the organizers looking back. This was due to the participation of the winning teams of all the previous editions, who fervently chased each other down.

The winners of team De Zesjescultuur were allowed to choose their own main prize: the fivesome passed over the balloon flight on offer and chose a set of five Oxboards. This meant the balloon trip went to the TU/e contestants on Team sTU/eff, who won the Bright Future Award (for the best young team with an average age of under 25). They finished in seventh place in the overall ranking.
