Where is that math?

Where is math at, and how will we use it today and in tomorrow's world? These questions took center stage at the National Mathematics Symposium, held on Tuesday March 20 at TU/e. Study association GEWIS of the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science brought the event to Eindhoven.

Architecture, Building and Planning, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering - the average layperson would find it easier to imagine what you do in any one of these branches of technical study than to understand what 'doing math' involves. While in the words of math student Levi Prikken, "The fact that you can make math so practical is precisely what appeals to me about it."

For the outsider it may well be pretty much invisible, but math is everywhere - and, what's more, absolutely indispensable. Our video reporter Collin Wagenmakers, himself a student of Applied Mathematics, went in search of examples during the National Mathematics Symposium. The symposium, with the theme 'Modern World Mathematics', was held on Tuesday March 20 in Eindhoven, thanks to study association GEWIS, which hosted the event.
