Hamer has been chairman of the SER since 2014 and was a member of the House of Representatives from 1998 to 2014. During this period she covered the education and research subjects for some time. She held various board positions within the PvdA.

Chairman Baptiest Coopmans of the TU/e Supervisory Board calls the appointment of Hamer a welcome reinforcement. The Board is now even more complementary in composition, he explains. "The Board has the best candidates to serve this university in the future. Her chairmanship of the SER and experience in Dutch politics, supplemented by her educational background, are of great value to TU/e.”

Founder LSVb

Before her political career, Mariëtte Hamer was head of the Strategic Policy and Policy Studies department at the Higher Professional Education department of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and director of an adult education institution. Hamer was the founder and first chairman of the Dutch National Student Union (the LSVb) in 1984. Both the relationship between education and the labor market and emancipation issues are important themes in all her activities.

In the arrival of Hamer, the TU/e Executive Board sees recognition for the position of both the university and the region at a national level. President Jan Mengelers also refers to the recent announcement that Robert-Jan Smits will become the new TU/e president as of 1 April 2019. "Both bring administrative knowledge and experience that are of great value to the public network of Eindhoven University of Technology."

Hamer succeeds Annet Bertram in the Supervisory Board. The other members of the Supervisory Board are ir. Baptiest Coopmans (chairman), Senior Vice President of Technology Operations at Liberty Global, prof.dr.ir. Jacob Fokkema, former Rector Magnificus of Delft University of Technology, prof.dr. Coen Teulings, professor of Economics at the University of Cambridge and university professor at the University of Utrecht, and Peter Wennink, President & CEO of ASML.
