A look inside Huize PL

Every month Cursor will be visiting a student house. Who lives there, what do they do there, what traditions do they have, and what do they talk about? We'll write down whatever we hear, and put on film whatever we see. This time we are visiting Huize PL. Above vacant business premises on Strijpsestraat live five TU/e students and a former student. For third-year Automotive student Stef van der Wielen this place is his second home.

All the fun and friendly atmosphere is pressed into the little kitchen, for the lack of a lounge. Here, games are played, stories are shared about the weekend and traditions are born. After all, none of these six students has been living here longer than two years. It may well “smell like a genuine student house” (according to video maker Collin Wagenmakers), but it doesn't yet have any long-standing traditions. So they are being made.

Since December the second-year students Kirsten Tensen (ID), Elise Wielinga (B), Romy Hoppen (P&T), Jelle Osinga (P&T) and Douwe Terpstra (ID) having been noting down all the edgy comments they make in a quote book. Everything it contains is STRICTLY SECRET - and only entertaining for those who know the context.

Among the residents and fixtures (hallo Stef!) there are few real party animals. A single Thêta (rowing) case and a beginner at Totelos (indoor soccer) and that's as far as it goes. Thêta isn't even taken completely seriously; as soon as Jelle says the name, the others chant ‘Tettaaa’.

The most striking room is Jelle's “because there isn't a single musical instrument to be found here”, the smallest belongs to Elise. She also pays the least rent, 170 euros. Huize PL could put together a full-blown orchestra, with two pianos, three guitars, a banjo and a double bass. Just suppose that Kirsten added some rapping… Oh well, don't hold your breath.

They would rather play Regenwormen. A game of dice and tiles printed with numbers and rainworms. Evidently Romy starts to cry if she loses, but that has only happened once and Cursor wasn't there. Today they have a beer as they play, “but there are evenings that we guzzle down water,” Kirsten assures us. Her housemates harass her with music by Blǿf (Zoutelande track), but she isn't easily daunted by them. If need be she runs away when Douwe stalks her.

Oh yes, there's another tradition besides the quote book. The Big Huize PL quiz has been held now for the second time. Still with irregularity, but already massive fun. Anyone holding a key to the house can join in (and Stef has a key because he's going out with Kirsten). One of the questions was: ‘In which capital cities will you find these trashcans?’ Who wouldn't want to join in. There are only seven lucky souls.
