Intro 2019 | Crossing on a hairdresser's chair and a beer crate

You probably have seen them around, and if not, then you must have at least heard them. The mechanical engineers of society E.W.D. Hephaestus attract attention with their ‘beer crate racer’ and their trike. And they are proud of their creations.

With a big grin on their faces, Kevin Loman and Harmen Meijer cross around the MetaForum on their beer crate racer and trike. They and twenty other members of the society have the privilege of riding on their self-made creations during the Intro. Lending them to others is a no-go. Harmen: "You also need some instructions to ride them properly."

The trike has been around for three years, the two students mention, and is mainly used during the Intro. This year it really got ‘upgraded’. Kevin: “We saw that the chairs of the university hairdresser’s salon were being removed, and saw that as an opportunity. We used one and put it on the trike." Just in case you wonder ‘Hey, wasn’t there a couch behind the trike yesterday?’ Correct, but unfortunately one of its wheels broke down yesterday. "It being a bit overloaded and going too fast probably contributed to the defect", Harmen suspects.

The trike was made by a former member of the society about three years ago, and Kevin made the beer crate racer himself. “I used to have a mini motorbike. It broke down, but the engine was still intact. I thought ‘that fits perfectly in a beer crate’. "After collecting some more parts, the special vehicle saw the light of day.

The two students still express how helpful it was for them to be allowed to use the workshop of Mechanical Engineering. “That is a nice space where we have the opportunity to make anything ourselves. We sincerely hope that we can retain such a space, also after the renovation of Gemini."

But enough with the talk, let’s walk the walk: time to accelerate and bring back the grin on their faces.
