Eindhoven korfball players win field championship: "Attilians at the top!"

It's Saturday May 25. With - and despite - the chance of winning the championship, the atmosphere among the Attilians is quite relaxed. “We only know a week in advance if we have a chance to become field champion. If we hadn't won the previous game, it would have been a different situation," Floor Steenvoorden from the Eindhoven students korfball club explains. This match against Springfield from Hoeven will determine whether Attila will be promoted to the third class. In case of a won or a tie match, the field championship is in the pocket.

Believing in one's own business is half the battle. Steenvoorden: "I think we will win." Attila scores its first point soon after the match started. Number 13 clearly voices his enthusiasm with every point scored. It happens to be club president Sebastian van Andel. Break time starts with 10-4 in favor of Attila. A nice lead for the second half. Will they keep the head start or will the opponent change our destiny?

Then the final whistle makes the call: the match is over and Attila wins with 19-10. The opponent congratulates Attila, the team members give each other high fives and the club song is audible all over the fields. “We are always at the top in the hall and on the artificial grass. We are born to score, as a real Attilian does. Attilians, Attilians, Attilians at the top! They don’t hold back for anyone, Attilians at the top!” If you wonder whether the name Attila is inspired by Attila the Hun, then the answer is ‘yes’. "He was always combative as well!"

Korfball. The only ball sport with more than two players that has genders mixed. Now, is the prejudice true: will there be some mixed showering after this game? Steenvoorden: “We like to tell people that. But no, that's not the standard. I once did it in a bikini as a joke. Tonight we will go out for dinner, including unlimited drinks.”

The last time Attila won field champion was already at least five years ago. Since then, the Eindhoven korfball club has grown considerably to more than sixty members. Coach Yannick Dekker is very proud of his team: “We came a long way from the start of this season, both individually and as a team. We earned this championship."
