Members of Footloose can finally dance again

During the lockdown, doing sports and dancing in groups was not allowed for a month. But since this week people can dance again. At Footloose they are extremely happy with that. Cursor visited the first salsa class that took place after the measures were lifted.

There’s excitement in the air in the Coronazaal of Luna on Tuesday night. After a month of waiting, members of student dance association Footloose can hit the dance floor again for salsa classes. That being possible was a close call, says Biomedical Engineering student Bryan van der Ven, who is the secretary of the association. “We essentially are a cultural association, so when we heard that the cultural sector had to stay closed, we were afraid that also applied to our dance classes.”

Luckily that wasn’t the case and now the couples twirl around on the dancefloor, accompanied by Latin music. The members all had to show a QR code when entering the premises. Also, a board member of Footloose keeps an eye on if the dancers keep enough distance to each other. That obviously doesn’t apply to the couples, who are allowed to dance real close.

Crowded

Normally towards the end of the semester the amount of dancers decreases, but now it’s crowded. “You can clearly notice that people missed the dancing”, laughs Van der Ven. He’s also here for his first class after the lockdown and that makes him very happy. “With dancing you always have something to look forward to. That can help make things easier. Especially when you’re struggling with your studies.”
