RoboCup | Tremendous media coverage

Eindhoven was under the spell of robots for five days in a row. During the 2013 RoboCup, 2,500 participants from 40 countries competed for the world title in 15 categories with all kinds of robots – soccer robots, care robots, rescue robots, and dance robots. The RoboCup was covered extensively by national and international media. The event reached all corners of the globe.

Science officer Barry van der Meer said he was accosted by ‘pretty much all major news agencies’. “NOS covered the event with a fun item in both the 6 o’clock and the 8 o’clock news on Wednesday, we did two interviews for the news on Radio 1 on Wednesday morning, and on Thursday the RoboCup was featured in the Jeugdjournaal (children’s news). Hart van Nederland, a show for popular news, came by on Thursday as well, and they had so much fun they stayed for hours. Ruud de Wild of Radio538, Giel on 3FM, and newspapers Algemeen Dagblad, Financieel Dagblad, Trouw, NRC, and De Telegraaf reported on the RoboCup. Omroep Brabant and Studio040 featured many live broadcasts and newspaper Eindhovens Dagblad published new articles every day. And on Friday, Queen Máxima visited the cup, which attracted a large number of photographers and camera crews as well, of course.”

The officer was impressed with the international press. “On Thursday we welcomed the three biggest press agencies: Reuters, Ap, and AFP. They were all extremely excited about the event. Their photos and videos are sued all over the world. The man from Reuters was dead sure their coverage would be in great demand at large stations like CNN and CBS.”

The news was picked up everywhere - from the US, to India, to Brazil. Van der Meer even received a phone call from Japanese TV. They wanted to broadcast parts of the final. “RoboCup news traveled the world.”

A thousand people watched the finals via livestream. The daily talk show hosted by Lieven Scheire for RoboCup TV reached a total of 40,000 viewers.
