“Help students go international”

More Dutch students should be going abroad, if it’s up to the association of students who’ve already spent part of their study time in another country. Secretary of Education Jet Bussemaker doesn’t seem to realize that.

Loads of international students come to the Netherlands every year, much to Bussemaker’s delight. Last weekend, the Secretary of Education announced that she wants them to stay in the Netherlands after their graduation, and start their professional careers here. It’s expected to be a major boost to the Dutch economy.

In the meantime, no more than a few thousand Dutch students opt for a complete undergraduate or graduate program abroad every year. Bussemaker should look into that, says Nick Hirschstein of the Association of Netherlands Worldwide Students. She should encourage the Dutch to enroll in foreign study programs.
