Extra weekend opening after Christmas: over 1,100 library visitors
Over 1,100 students have visited the MetaForum library last weekend. It was the first time the building opened sooner after New Year’s to meet users’ needs. For now, keeping MetaForum open during holidays is out of the question, but because of a subsequent exam period, it will be open during Easter weekend.
“Relatively crowded in Meta. More students probably bummed MF was closed. How about MF open every day?” The idea was posted last Saturday afternoon from MetaForum by twitterer Loek Jongen (student of Industrial Engineering). The call for extended opening hours for MetaForum specifically is nothing new – the Eindhoven Student Council has already researched the matter a while ago.
Building manager Johan Lauwers stresses the building already opened sooner than usual after the Christmas break: on Saturday, January 3, instead of the following Monday. From 6 p.m. on December 14 until January 3 however, the place was closed.
Carola Tak of IEC, one of the consultative parties when it comes to MetaForum’s opening hours, is aware that several universities do have extended opening hours, and during Christmas as well. “We’ve always maintained that we’re closed during holidays and bridge days, but we might need to rethink that at some point.”
The opening hours schedule for this academic year doesn’t show any changes yet, save one exception: MetaForum and the library will be open over the Easter weekend, including Good Friday. The decision was made in light of the exam period directly following Easter.
