TU/e gains a debating association

Teaching students to present in English, putting TU/e on the international map, encouraging opinion-forming. The initiators - seven Bachelor's students taking various study programs - foresee a wealth of benefits arising from the launch of their debating association ESDA Chronos. At the first big debating event, planned for April 25, TU/e teams will compete against teams from other universities.

On May 9, the students will visit the Chamber of Commerce to officially establish their Eindhoven Student Debate Association Chronos. Every Monday debating sessions will be held in the Common Room and now and then the students will run a workshop. The debaters will employ various debating formats, including the British Parliamentary (BP) style, but the meetings will also include informal discussion. “There's also the United Nations model, which is a more appropriate format for exchanges worldwide with other universities,” says chairperson Michael Stolk. “But it also has more rules.” Although discussion topics may be political in nature, the initiators are keen to emphasize that there will also be plenty of debate on TU/e-specific issues. A kick-off event is planned for Monday, April 25, when the topics under discussion will include military intervention in the Middle East, the affordability of university education and future laws related to self-driving cars. All debates will be conducted in English.
