Intro 2018 | Surfing: "On dry land it’s a breeze"

The wind blows in gusts, sometimes earlier than expected, which isn’t ideal if you want to learn how to surf. Boom, pull-up rope and sail, on the grass you can handle these things but it is more difficult with the moving water level below you. Student Surf Association Weth gave workshops at the IJzeren Man to teach the intro kids how to luff and bear-away (going towards the wind or going with the wind).

Roel van der Velde, future Mechanical Engineering student admits: "I suck at this". He is more of a rower, because he has been rowing in Roosendaal for six years. He will also become a member of Thêta and hopes to reach the competition level there. But for now, he is lying in the pond next to the ring road of Eindhoven.

"First stand up", he gives as tip to his friend Elise de Leeuw. She wants to, really, but how? Experienced Wethers on shore know that she doesn’t have to be strong. Fine motor skills and stability help. But Elise doesn’t have enough of that yet. Too bad, and again she goes under water.
