Intro 2023 | Culture out of the box

Film, theater and dance are the usual suspects when you think of the composition of a culture festival. But student rowing association Thêta and student automobile association De Beunbazen put together their own acts. The culture festival, making its debut this Intro, was opened by “Close act”.

Theater company “Close act” consists of three puppeteers who walk about. They had their puppets stick their curious noses - or rather eyes - into everything all over the KOE field and at Forum. ESAV De Beunbazen enjoyed the show. But what brings a student car association to a culture festival?

“Car culture is most definitely very important in the Netherlands,” says Beunbaas Kevin van den Boom. “Just look at us (he is referring to the 130 members of the association whose hobby is refurbishing cars, Ed.) - we love nothing more than talking about cars. So much so that we forget to recruit new members, haha.” If Cursor were to let him have his way, he would happily talk about his vintage DAF for a good eight hours or so.

Four “driving projects” are parked on the KOE field and their owners can answer any and all questions about their cars’ place on the timeline of automotive development over the past hundred years. “The way an art lover talks about paintings,” says Kevin. If that’s not culture, what is?

The members of Thêta put together a museum. They selected photos from fifty documents and stuck them on a meters-long timeline - with yellow tape. They are quite impressed with it themselves. The origins of the student rowing association date back to 1839.

Meanwhile, Studium Generale is handing out sweet and salty popcorn and Intro attendees get to decide whether to eat it outside or inside in De Zwarte Doos while watching a series of short films.

Next to the pond, more than 50 (soon-to-be) students are pounding away at drums for a percussion workshop. “Get into the Brazil flow,” the conductor encourages the unmoving audience. He still has many instruments available, ready to be played.
