Intro stats: 100 new friends and an energy level of 0.5
At TU/e, we like to record our findings in hard figures. This also applies to the Intro. First-year students Jeske, Joël, Lucas, and Intro dad Tycho share the statistics of their Intro Week with Cursor: how many hours of sleep were obtained, and how much beer was consumed?
The smell of hot sausages lingers in the air and electronic bleeps can be heard coming from the speakers. “That's the Kassa Remix, a song a former student made using a toy cash register,” Intro parent Tycho says. The track has a mythical status among Mathematics & Computer Science students and is often played on repeat for hours, including during the breakfast organized by the GEWIS study association on Friday morning on the field behind Atlas.
Tycho (blue shirt) was in charge of a group of computer science students during the Intro. Joël, Jeske, and Lucas (from left to right) are three of them.
How many steps did you walk during the Intro?
Tycho arrives at a total of 91,000. Joël has apparently been following his Intro dad around relentlessly, because he reaches the exact same amount of steps.
The other two did not track their steps during the Intro, but Lucas reports sore feet. “And I have a blister,” Jeske adds.
How many new people did you get to know?
The numbers mentioned initially vary, because, well, when do you really know someone? Once it becomes clear that Cursor isn’t just counting new BFFs, consensus begins to form. Jeske, Joël, and Lucas have each made around 40 new friends and acquaintances. Tycho has been even more sociable: “About 100.”
How much beer did you drink?
Jeske and Joël have had 0 beers. Lucas estimates a total of 40 to 50 beers, over the course of the Intro. Tycho's shirt has 27 beers marked on it, “but those are just the ones I chugged.” His final score is around 70 beers.
How would you rate Intro 2025?
Jeske and Lucas both give an 8. “Just take it easy,” is how the latter describes the vibe of his week. Joël outbids him with a “solid 8.5.” He had a great time, although there will always be small details that could be improved: “Sometimes you just wonder: why?! Like on Wednesday morning at the PSV stadium, where a few thousand students simultaneously had to park their bikes in a parking facility with only one narrow entrance.”
Lastly, Tycho gives his Intro a “fine 9.” Due to the fun people and because the week went well, even though he had to manage a large group of kids due to a shortage of Intro parents. “We only lost one,” he concludes contentedly.
How many hours did you sleep during the Intro?
Joël grabs his phone and, using the tracker, calculates that he spent exactly 19.2 hours in the land of dreams. Spread over three nights, because, as is tradition, the group did not sleep during the final Intro night.
Thanks to his ability to sleep in late in the morning, Lucas lands at 21 hours and Jeske reaches a comfortable 25 hours. After doing some calculations, Tycho doesn't get further than a maximum of 15 hours. “We pulled an all-nighter yesterday, and the night before I only got home at half past five in the morning.”
To conclude, how would you rate your current energy level?
Jeske is still doing reasonably well: “I rate my energy level as a 4.” Joël scores lower. “A 2.5. As long as I stay on my feet, I'm fine, but as soon as I sit down, I will fall asleep.” For Tycho, the range of 1 to 10 is insufficient: “My energy level gets a 0.5. I'm going home soon and then I'm going to sleep all weekend.”
Lucas is the only one who feels as fresh as a daisy. As he automatically starts to dance again to the beats of the Kassa Remix, he says: "My energy is an 8! No clue why. I didn’t sleep a single wink, but I’m on top of the world.”
