The unions and activists wanted to make their voices heard on Dam Square in Amsterdam on Tuesday against the government cuts to higher education and research. But a train strike makes the capital difficult to reach.
Railway unions have called a strike by NS staff in the Randstad (area around the four big cities) due to a conflict over the new collective labor agreement. As a result, no trains will be running in the entire country on Tuesday.
Solidarity
“We of course fully support the right to strike and want to express our solidarity with the train strikers,” says a statement from the unions FNV, AOb and LSVb plus action groups 0.7 and WOinActie.
Employees of universities and colleges are allowed to strike on Tuesday after all. The unions are not calling off the strike, they write. Teachers, researchers, other employees and students therefore still have the right to stop working or studying, even if the national demonstration does not take place.
