Professors in gowns visit schools for TU/e anniversary
To celebrate the seventieth anniversary of TU/e, 45 professors in academic gowns cycled to seventeen schools in Eindhoven on Tuesday. They were welcomed with great enthusiasm. Later, a procession through the city centre followed. Cursor joined for a video report.
“What do you really need to become a professor?” asks professor Yvonne de Kort (see main photo) to a classroom full of young children. According to the children, you need a magnifying glass, a flashlight, and a bag. De Kort nods in agreement.
Her colleague Loe Schlicher returns shortly afterward from his lesson, where he also received questions from the children about who would win the World Cup and whether he also slept at the university. “Yeah, no, of course not!” The professors had a lot of fun at their classes, where they were welcomed with a lot of enthusiasm from the kids.
They cycled to the primary school de BoschAkker in academic robes to mark the university’s 70th anniversary. Later, a procession through the city center also took place. De Kort: “You want to make people feel: we are part of the city.”
That goal was clearly achieved on this day. The academic robes were impossible to miss as they fluttered on the bicycles. The long line of professors in robes, study associations carrying flags, and a whole group of normally dressed people later occupied several streets in the city center at once.
Many more celebrations will follow in October, but on the day the university actually turned 70, a solid foundation was already laid.
