Student who made Nazi salute arrested at home

During a calculus lecture for first-year students, the student in question allegedly made insults and threats toward his fellow students. Footage circulating on social media shows him subsequently making a Nazi salute.

Police tracked down the student and arrested him at his home on Stratumseind, a police spokesperson said. The student, who is a minor, was arrested on suspicion of making threats.

According to police, the suspect also sent videos in a group chat with other students. “The videos are part of the investigation.”

The video of the incident also contains screenshots of what appears to be a group chat for Electrical Engineering students, in which racist and insulting remarks are also made. Cursor has not yet been able to confirm whether those remarks were made by the student in question.

Appropriate measures

The Executive Board issued a statement yesterday, in which it strongly condemned the student’s actions. Depending on what emerges from the investigation into the situation, the university promises to take appropriate measures.

The Electrical Engineering departmental board has sent an email to all students, encouraging those who feel the need to speak with someone about what happened to reach out to an academic advisor.

A meeting was held Wednesday evening at Walhalla, attended by students, teaching assistants and teachers. According to the departmental board, the meeting helped largely ease concerns and unrest among students. Several students have requested additional conversations.

In custody

It is not yet clear how long the student will remain in custody. Because he has been placed in police custody for further investigation, police can hold him for three periods of 24 hours. 

“After that, a person must be brought before an examining magistrate, who decides whether they can be held in custody for longer,” the police spokesperson said. “Our colleagues are working hard on the investigation, which includes interviewing the suspect and witnesses.”
