Lustrum: Fluxfield transforms into mini festival site

“The idea is that we want to draw people to the tent every day,” says Brigit Span, one of the organizers of Lustrum Week from the Communication Expertise Center.

“There is a well-balanced program,” Span says. On Monday, the very first edition of the lunch program called Curiosity Bites will take place. Every weekday during lunch two scientists will be interviewed on stage about a variety of topics, such as design ideas to help people with dementia and the science behind coffee. 

The interviews will be recorded and later shared as a podcast on the TU/e website. Food will be available at the nearby food truck area to enjoy during the lunch talks. You are welcome to bring your own drinks into the tent for these lunches.

On Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, scientists will put their fields of expertise to music during the Cheers to Science sessions. Over drinks in a relaxed setting, they will translate their fields into music. There are two themes: (Algo)Rhythm & Blues and The Future of Humans and AI and Technology.

These events will take place in a mirror tent, which originally was a Belgian dance tent. On Monday evening, it will be transformed into a quiz arena. A maximum of 55 teams of five people will compete against each other in this general knowledge quiz. Entry costs 10 euros per team.

All above mentioned activities are open to everyone, including those who do not study or work at TU/e. 

F*ck Up Night

On Wednesday, the F*ck Up Night will take place: an evening centered around learning from mistakes. Several guest speakers will each have six minutes to talk about their personal mistakes and setbacks at work.

“We all have to be excellent and perfect, while you can also learn from mistakes. This applies to science as well. If you don’t publish about a failed experiment, others might make the same mistake again,” says Span.

During the F*ck Up Night, scientists will be joined by students, professors and alumni entrepreneurs. This event is open only to members of the TU/e community.

Staff party

“These tents used to travel from fair to fair as dance tents,” Span explains. On Friday evening, the mirror tent will therefore be used for its original purpose. During the staff party, university employees can celebrate the TU/e Lustrum on the dancefloor. 

Staff can dance to music by, among others, Rolf Sanchez, cover band The Night Flight and trumpeter Jeffrey Parmentier. Tired? There will be seating areas inside the tent.

Entry costs 5 euros, which includes a snack and a drink.

More events

Lustrum Week also includes other events for TU/e students, staff and alumni. There will be a Lustrum Gala for students, and student team Totem Game Dev has created a video game especially for the occasion.
