Rik Rutjens (graduate student of Applied Mathematics) has his roommates peel and dice two squashes, for lack of a food processor. Since the house doesn't have a large pot, they use two smaller ones. AllerHande, the supermarket magazine they get all their recipes from, is fine with that solution. They're making a hearty soup, which is sweet, really: their roommate Ingmar Westerhof (another grad student of Applied Mathematics) just had his wisdom tooth pulled and he can't chew anything yet. The second tooth is scheduled for pulling in a few weeks.
What kind of house is this?
Well. It's about to be sold. The owner is selling this house (as well as neighboring student residence Noordpool) because another party has expressed their interest in the two huge homes at Boschdijk 456 and 454, built in the 30s of last century. But not everyone's eager to leave. Lisanne Hermans (Nursing student at Fontys) is fine with leaving if she's generously compensated, as is Laura Dryer (3rd-year Biomedical Engineering, currently not at home). Rik and Ingmar are really annoyed, however. They won't be able to look for new homes this year, because they're both in the board of GEWIS. A lawyer friend has managed to reassure the men they probably won't be evicted until they have both graduated, even in case of a trial. Pascal Ruwen, a Built Environment freshman, doesn't want to leave, either. He just moved in and loves the place.
Recept: squash soup with grilled peppers (serves 8)
Fry two finely chopped onions in olive oil. Add the diced pumpkin and fry for five more minutes. Add 1.5 liters of stock and bring to the boil. Let simmer for fifteen minutes.
Add half a jar of grilled pepper strips.
Puree the soup with a masher until you find your food processor, then use that. Add the rest of the peppers and 500 milliliters of cream.
Serve with buttered toast sprinkled with your favorite grated cheese.

Do you have any house rules?
“The only rule we have is there must be dessert”, says Lisanne. She's happy to see that today dessert is her favorite brand of raspberry custard. “You bet people get cranky if there's no dessert.” Rik remembers another rule: “Whoever cooks, serves. And you can only have a second helping if everyone has finished their plates”. Ingmar: “We're here to educate each other a little as well.”
