Construction new residential towers good news for students
Eindhoven is getting two new residential towers. This is good news for students. The towers will provide 600 student homes and will be just a stone's throw away from the campus. The municipality of Eindhoven announced this yesterday, reports the Eindhovens Dagblad (ED).
It concerns the construction of two residential towers of up to 70 meters high on the Professor Doctor Dorgelolaan, parallel to the TU/e campus. Alderman Thijs Steenbakkers emphasizes in the ED that this is ‘an important step towards fulfilling agreements on additional student housing in the city’. It is not yet known when the residential towers will be built.
The municipality is considering a connection between the student housing and the campus. 'Where that will come and whether that is a bridge, a tunnel or something else we have not decided anything at all about that yet,' the alderman told the newspaper. Half of the 600 student housing units are “non-self-contained” and have shared facilities.
Shortage
There has been a major shortage of student housing in Eindhoven for years. And then housing construction is also delayed. In the covenant on student housing, the municipality, together with other partners - including the TU/e - has set the ambition to build 3,410 additional student units through 2028. In 2024, Eindhoven had plans for 1,012 student units, of which 735 were delivered that year in the form of three new residential towers on the TU/e campus.
What is also not conducive are the government's plans to freeze the rental prices of social housing. As a result, the realization of many new homes is at risk, including in Southeast Brabant. The upcoming construction of the two residential towers with student housing on Professor Doctor Dorgelolaan is therefore good news.
Issue
At the start of the construction of the Haven student housing complex on the TU/e campus over two years ago, Mieke Verhees, Alderman for Housing, emphasized the importance of student housing as part of project Beethoven. “The entire region has growth plans and the municipality has the task of providing corresponding housing.”
