You may have noticed: since the summer, the canteens in Neuron and MetaForum have been closed, and they haven't reopened. Inquiries with TU/e reveal that this situation will persist for the time being.
Neuron saw too few customers. "We tried various concepts there, but nothing worked," says Marsha Jansen, the TU/e representative responsible for the contract with caterer Appèl.
She believes this is partly because a Spar supermarket is located right around the corner. "There are relatively many students in Neuron, and they like using the nearby Spar. Consequently, the canteen in Neuron simply isn't needed as much." So, the lights there remain off.
MetaForum
Another outlet where lunch is no longer available is MetaForum. "It’s closed due to renovation work that ran over schedule. However, the intention is to eventually reopen it."
Appèl was also asked for a comment on this matter but referred inquiries to TU/e. "We are in good discussions with Appèl," says Jansen. “Naturally, they are losing revenue too; besides these closed outlets, Gemini-Zuid has also been shut for quite some time due to construction work.”
Auditorium
The Auditorium hasn't had a traditional canteen for years. However, the TU/e community can visit the Subway sandwich counter there.
The space that used to house the canteen still exists, though it is screened off. Behind those screens, the refrigerators, ovens, work surfaces, and freezers are still in place. From the Auditorium’s balustrade, you can often see catering staff preparing lunches and other banquet items there.

Recently, several appliances in that former canteen broke down. “It involved freezers and refrigerators that developed short circuits due to a malfunction. Staff working in that kitchen were immediately affected by the faulty equipment, so the decision was made to install a few extra fridges and freezers as temporary replacements.”“It is uncertain whether the existing equipment will be repaired,” says Jansen. “We first need to decide whether the Auditorium will become the TU/e’s main prep kitchen, or if that function will be located in the MetaForum, for instance. In the former case, the investment is worthwhile; in the latter, it would be a waste.”
