CLMN | How about a phone for your phone?

28/01/2013

A while back I raised the question of why is it that we’re trying to cram as much functionality into the least amount of gadgets possible. I had a thought that there would come a time when our phones would become so bloated, a step back might become necessary in order for the technology to start making sense again. The problem, as it happens, is what that step back entails.

If you have a smartphone, I invite you to look at it. If it’s bigger than your palm, odds are that you look like you are talking to a waffle iron or a toaster when you hold it against your ear during a call. HTC apparently saw this problem, but instead of sacrificing precious screen real estate, they decided to make a new gadget for your million-inch phone. And that is… a smaller, dumber phone. I cannot make this up, really. And even though it is targeted right now only for the Chinese market, it’s still ludicrous by all standards. The idea is that you use this 'dumb' phone to make and receive calls without having to heft the monolith-sized smartphone out of your pocket or purse, and I find it completely ridiculous. I wish I was there at the meeting where they decided to commercialize this. This is not a step back; it’s more like a dozen. In the words of Xzibit, “Yo dawg, we heard you like to talk on the phone, so we made a phone that talks to your phone, so you…”. So it goes.
